Persona [re-design]
Sound design. November 2024
A meal in mutton, mutton, why is lamb cheaper, it is cheaper because so little is more.
– Gertrude Stein, “Mutton” (from Tender Buttons)
Rework of the opening sequence of Ingmar Bergman's Persona (1966) [youtu.be/FKrQurtU3sI?si=R6dy_a9aEETrnZJS] featuring original Foley and layered glass harp sounds throughout the piece created by recording myself ‘playing’ a single wine glass with varying volumes of water in it and then layering and warping the recordings. This project was inspired and informed by many other bodies of work including Bjarni Helgason’s “Making Strange Sounds;” Kaja Silverman’s “Body Talk;” Jacob Ribicoff, Eric Strausser, Marko Costanzo, and George A. Lara’s interviews about their work on the show Severance; and Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons, a poetry collection that, similar to Persona, makes its mundane subjects unfamiliar and strange and often relies on the emotional impression of words more than their actual meanings.
