Mothertongue (Ohio House Bill № 68)
Installation, December 2023
Mothertongue (Ohio House Bill № 68) continued the conversation started in Ohio House Bill № 183 in its exploration of the paranoia and anxiety experienced by trans & gender-nonconforming people in the face of transphobic legislation while also focusing on concepts of autonomy, desire, and change. H.B 68, also called the SAFE (Save Adolescents From Experimentation) Act, sought to ban minors from accessing gender-affirming care–and ban trans girls from competing on women's sports teams in schools and universities–in the state of Ohio.
Surrounding the monitor that played Mothertongue on a loop through two speakers (as well as through a pair of headphones viewers were encouraged to try on for a more intimate listening experience), the entirety of H.B. 68 as it was first proposed was written out by hand in white colored pencil across the surrounding walls. Mimicking recent overwhelming surges of transphobic bills, the handwritten text completely wrapped around and immersed the viewer as it grew, shrunk, expanded, and bent around and into itself.
The audio component of Mothertongue acts as a counter to H.B. 68 itself both through its lyrics (“To change your body / is to love your body”) and sound (working in conversation with research done by Judith A. Peraino on the queer & trans history of synth-pop and artists including Wendy Carlos and Laurie Anderson), and also serves to further unnerve the viewer/listener as the familiar concept of a meditation exercise slowly gives way to more unsettling themes and sounds. In December 2023, less than a month after this installation was installed, the governor of Ohio vetoed the bill; the veto was overruled in January 2024.
The SAFE Act went into effect in April of 2024.
